Laddonia

The Laddonia combined heat and power (CHP) system is the first generation project owned by MJMEUC to go into operation.

In 2005, a MJMEUC/POET Biorefining partnership was established to take advantage of the mutual benefit each entity had in utilizing a CHP project at POET's ethanol plant in Laddonia. Designed and developed by both Shafer, Kline, and Warren Inc. and MJMEUC, the project includes a natural gas fired combustion turbine built by Solar Turbine, an electrical substation and interconnect with AmerenUE, and a shared natural gas supply system. The turbine generator produces up to 15 MW of electricity for the Missouri Public Energy Pool (MoPEP) and the heat recovery steam generator, owned by POET, produces 63,000 pounds of steam to support their ethanol production processes.

With an operating efficiency of approximately 67 percent, the CHP system requires roughly 26 percent less fuel than typical onsite thermal generation and purchased electricity. Based on this comparison, the CHP system reduces CO2 emissions by an estimated 31,000 tons per year. This reduction is equivalent to 6,400 acres of pine or fir forests storing carbon for one year or the annual emissions from 5,200 passenger vehicles.

Macon Municipal Utilities (MMU) in Macon, Missouri, a member of MoPEP, owns a similar CHP system located 4 miles east of the city. MJMEUC contracted with MMU to maintain and operate the CHP system in Laddonia because of Macon’s experience in operating a nearly identical CHP system.

The Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission (MJMEUC) is a recipient of the EPA 2008 Energy Star CHP Award for its cogeneration project operating at Laddonia, Missouri. The EPA previously recognized MMU's CHP Project with an Energy Star Award in 2007.
