Apprentice Lineman Training
The Alliance proudly offers a quality lineman training program available only to MPUA municipal members utility personnel for the purpose of skill improvement or apprenticeship training.
The Apprentice Lineman Program is a four-year program designed to provide entry-level (apprentice) electric employees with the knowledge they need to perform their jobs safely and efficiently. The Apprentice Lineman Program is registered with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship and Training.
The curriculum includes training modules ranging from line tools to substation inspection and overhead maintenance of conductors and much more. The modules include detailed instructions, diagrams and examples. The result is a comprehensive training program which combines classroom and correspondence academics with practical hands-on training.
Curriculum also includes an Advanced Journeyman Lineman program. A one-year correspondence course designed for seasoned veterans in public power systems to obtain federally recognized Journeyman credentials. This is for the Lineman who has 10 years or more experience in transmission and distribution, but lacks the certification from the U.S. Dept. of Labor.
A four-year Underground Electrical System Specialist Program has also been developed taking information from the four-year Apprentice Program and the Underground Distribution handbook from Alexander Publications.
Students are required to have a minimum of 7200 hours of on-the-job training (OJT) through the four-year programs. They also take a comprehensive test at the completion of each module. A final exam is given at the end of each year.
